Why it usually falls apart

People try to get organized with a big weekend clear-out. It looks great for a week, then things drift back. Organization is a set of small daily habits: putting things back, writing things down and resetting spaces. Without them, any system decays.

How to be more organized

  1. Give everything a home

Keys in a bowl, post in a tray, bag on a hook. When everything has a place, putting it back takes seconds.

  2. Use one list

Write all tasks in one place, like a notebook or an app. Scattered notes are a source of stress.

  3. Do a daily reset

Ten minutes at the end of the day to tidy your desk and main room. Mornings start clean.

  4. Handle things once

Open the post and deal with it, file it or bin it on the spot. Piles come from putting things off.

  5. Plan tomorrow tonight

Write tomorrow's tasks and lay out what you need.

  6. Declutter a little each week

Remove one thing a day or one drawer a week. Less stuff is easier to organize.

What to track

Track the smallest version you would still count on your worst day. A row you can clear when tired is a row you keep:

  • Ten-minute daily reset
  • Keys in the bowl
  • Everything in one list
  • Tomorrow planned tonight

Print a tracker with these 4 habits or open them in a spreadsheet.

Your first week

  1. Day 1. Choose a home for your keys, wallet and bag.
  2. Day 2. Move all your to-dos into one list.
  3. Day 3. Do a ten-minute reset tonight.
  4. Day 4. Deal with today's post on the spot.
  5. Day 5. Plan tomorrow tonight.
  6. Day 6. Declutter one drawer.
  7. Day 7. Look back at how the week felt.
