Why it sticks

Gossip feels good because it creates instant closeness. Sharing something about someone else signals trust and makes you part of an in-group. It is also entertaining. The cost is quieter: people wonder what you say about them, and trust wears down. The cue is usually a particular person, a lunch break or a group chat where gossip is the default topic.

How to stop gossiping

  1. Know the test

Before sharing something, ask: is it true, is it kind, does it need to be said, and would I say it in front of them? If not, skip it.

  2. Change the subject smoothly

When gossip starts, ask a question about something else. 'Anyway, how did your weekend go?' Most people follow along.

  3. Say something good instead

If someone is being talked about, add a positive thing you know about them. It changes the tone without a lecture.

  4. Mute the gossip group chat

If one chat is where most gossip happens, mute it or leave. Less input means fewer chances to join in.

  5. Find other ways to connect

Share something about yourself or ask about the other person's life. That builds a closer bond than gossip does.

  6. Walk away when it gets mean

If a conversation turns cruel, excuse yourself. You do not need to explain.

What to track instead

A row that only records the habit not happening gets a tick on the days you were never tempted, and tells you nothing on the day it mattered. Give the row to the replacement:

  • Subject changed
  • Something good said about someone
  • Gossip chat muted
  • Personal story shared

Print a tracker with these 4 habits or open them in a spreadsheet.

Your first week

  1. Day 1. Notice each time you gossip or are tempted, and with whom.
  2. Day 2. Learn the test and use it before sharing.
  3. Day 3. Change the subject once when gossip starts.
  4. Day 4. Mute the chat where it happens most.
  5. Day 5. Say something good about someone being discussed.
  6. Day 6. Share something about yourself instead.
  7. Day 7. Look at your log. Which person or place triggers it most?

How to stop gossiping

Why do people gossip?

It builds closeness and is entertaining. It also helps people understand social rules. The harm comes when it is unkind or untrue.

Is all gossip bad?

Sharing neutral news about people is normal. Gossip becomes a problem when it is mean, private or would hurt the person if they heard it.

How do I stop gossiping at work?

Change the subject, mute work chats that turn into gossip, and use the test before sharing. People notice and start to trust you more.
