Why it sticks
YouTube is built to remove the moment where you decide to stop. Autoplay starts the next video before you have finished the last, the sidebar offers ten more, and Shorts drop the length so low that 'one more' never feels like a commitment. The cue is often tiredness, which is also when your judgement about stopping is at its worst. Hours pass without any single decision to spend them.
How to stop watching YouTube
Turn off autoplay and hide Shorts
Switch autoplay off in the app settings. Then tap 'Not interested' or 'Show fewer Shorts' a few times, or use the browser version where Shorts are easier to ignore. Removing the auto-next step alone cuts most binges in half.
Turn off watch history
Pausing watch history in your Google account empties the home page of recommendations. You get a search bar and your subscriptions. It is dull on purpose, and dull is what lets you close the tab.
Decide the videos before you start
Add what you want to watch to Watch Later during the day. In the evening, open that list only. When it is empty you are done. You are choosing with the part of your day that still has judgement.
Move YouTube to the TV
A video on the TV is something you sit down for. On a phone in bed it is a feed with no end. Moving YouTube to one screen in one room takes it out of the slot before sleep.
Set a hard stop with a timer
Put a timer on the kitchen counter rather than the phone, so you have to get up to silence it. That small walk breaks the trance, and most people do not sit back down for another video.
Use the same hour for something you watch on purpose
Pick a series, a film or a long documentary. A finished piece has an ending, and an ending lets you stop with the feeling of having done something rather than lost something.
What to track instead
A row that only records the habit not happening gets a tick on the days you were never tempted, and tells you nothing on the day it mattered. Give the row to the replacement:
- Watch Later list only
- YouTube off by 10pm
- Read before bed
- Autoplay off
Print a tracker with these 4 habits or open them in a spreadsheet.
Your first week
- Day 1. Turn autoplay off and pause watch history.
- Day 2. Add three videos you actually want to Watch Later.
- Day 3. Watch only that list tonight and stop when it is empty.
- Day 4. Delete the YouTube app from the phone and use the TV or browser.
- Day 5. Set a kitchen timer for your evening stop time.
- Day 6. Replace one evening's YouTube with a film or a book.
- Day 7. Look back at the week and count the nights you stopped on time.
How to stop watching YouTube
Why can't I stop watching YouTube?
Because every exit is designed out. Autoplay, recommendations and short videos all remove the pause where you would decide to stop. Put those pauses back with settings and a list, and stopping becomes possible again.
Is it bad to watch YouTube before bed?
Watching on a phone in bed tends to push sleep later, mainly because nothing ends. If you want something before sleep, a single video on the TV followed by a book does less damage than an open feed.
Does turning off YouTube history really help?
Yes. It removes the personalised home page, which is where most unplanned watching starts. Your subscriptions and search still work, so you lose nothing you went there for.
